Sri Lanka’s travel and tourism sector experienced significant growth in May 2026, reaching new record levels despite ongoing geopolitical tensions and regional conflicts. The island nation’s tourism performance during this period reflects its ability to attract visitors even amid persistent uncertainties affecting the wider region.
One key factor contributing to this growth was the implementation of a free tourist electronic travel authorization, available to citizens from the United Kingdom, United States, India, Germany, Australia, and more than thirty other countries. This easing of travel procedures has played a role in facilitating increased arrivals to Sri Lanka.
