Europe has recently introduced a new digital border management system known as the Schengen Entry Exit System (EES) at its external borders. This system is designed to modernize and secure border controls across Schengen countries.

WTTC Highlights Potential Delays

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has expressed concerns that the new EES may lead to significant delays for arriving travelers. These delays could extend to as long as three hours, impacting the flow of visitors entering Europe through Schengen entry points.

According to the WTTC analysis, the introduction of this system puts up to 41 million visitor arrivals at risk of facing extended

waiting times during border checks. The potential bottlenecks could slow down entry procedures substantially, particularly in the launch period of the EES starting in 2026.
