Health authorities have confirmed infections of hantavirus among several passengers evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship. These cases were identified following testing procedures carried out after passengers were disembarked in Spain.

Following the detection of hantavirus-positive cases, the MV Hondius underwent quarantine and comprehensive disinfection protocols while docked in Rotterdam port. The measures were implemented as a containment response to the outbreak on board.

The incidents were reported in late May 2026 and involved health officials from Spain and Rotterdam. Both locations played a key role in managing the situation, including testing passengers and overseeing containment efforts on the

ship.

Cruise travelers are advised to stay informed about health advisories and potential quarantine requirements related to infectious diseases when embarking or docking at European ports affected by such outbreaks.
