Charlotte Douglas Airport is preparing to implement a smart runway designed to support improvements in travel safety and airport operations. This initiative reflects increasing interest in integrating technology to enhance the overall passenger experience at major airports.

The project includes the installation of roughly 2,000 sensors embedded within the runway infrastructure. These sensors are expected to provide continuous monitoring and data collection to facilitate safer and more efficient aircraft movements during both landings and takeoffs.

The deployment of this advanced runway technology is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2026. Airport authorities anticipate that the system will contribute to

better operational performance, though detailed benefits and technical specifics have yet to be disclosed.
