Boston Logan International Airport recorded 520 flight delays and cancellations as of Monday night, prompted by lingering weather from a weekend nor’easter and ongoing runway construction. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initiated a ground delay at 7:30 a.m., set to continue until 2:59 a.m. Tuesday, with inbound flights experiencing average delays exceeding five hours.
The FAA attributed the ground delay to runway and taxiway construction at Logan. Massport, the airport’s operator, cited the combined impact of the nor’easter’s weather and infrastructure work as responsible for the disruptions. The storm dropped between three and more than seven inches of rain across
southern New England over the weekend, with additional rainfall of up to one inch forecast through Monday evening.
Normal operations were hindered by a runway closure necessitated by construction. Jennifer Mehigan, a Massport spokesperson, explained that the winds on Monday would typically have allowed use of the closed runway. Current operations rely on alternative runways, but air traffic controllers face reduced efficiency managing flights without the primary runway in service.
The nor’easter’s effects include sustained rain and wind conditions across southern New England, which are expected to ease as the storm system weakens and moves northward. This combination of weather
and construction has prolonged delays and cancellations throughout the day.
Passengers traveling to or from Boston Logan International Airport encountered significant scheduling disruptions, particularly inbound flights averaging delays of approximately five hours and 14 minutes. Massport advises travelers to verify flight status with their airlines before traveling to the airport to avoid unnecessary delays.
