At least 374 flights into or out of the United States experienced delays and 59 were cancelled as of 9:44 a.m. EST on October 28, 2026, according to FlightAware. Globally, FlightAware reported over 7,143 flight delays and 558 cancellations at the same time.
Flight disruptions on October 28 were primarily caused by weather conditions. The Federal Aviation Administration noted that low clouds affected operations at San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), while wind conditions delayed flights at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas (LAS).
Eryn Gordon, a TedX speaker on ethical and responsible travel, advised travelers
to view cancellations as planning challenges rather than emergencies. Gordon urged passengers to screenshot rebooking policies before departure and warned against automatically accepting the first available seat offered, as this can result in overnight stays at connecting airports while luggage arrives separately.
In addition to low cloud cover and winds, the FAA reported that multiple U.S. airports were affected by flight disruptions on October 28. The combination of these weather factors contributed to widespread delays and cancellations during the morning hours.
Travel experts recommend passengers regularly check their flight status through airline websites or apps and enable notifications for gate
changes, delays, or cancellations. They also encourage allowing extra connection time at busy airports and keeping essential items in carry-on luggage to better manage lengthy delays or disruptions.
