On October 28, 2026, at least 374 flights experienced delays and 59 flights were canceled across multiple airports in the United States as of 9:44 a.m. EST, according to FlightAware. The flight tracking service reported over 7,143 delays and 558 cancellations worldwide on the same day.

Weather-Related Causes at Key US Airports

The Federal Aviation Administration attributed some delays to weather conditions, citing low clouds in San Diego International Airport (SAN) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). Additionally, wind conditions at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS) contributed to further disruptions.

Advice for Travelers Facing Delays and Cancellations

Eryn Gordon, a TedX speaker on ethical and responsible travel, recommended treating cancellations as logistical issues

rather than emergencies. She advised travelers to document rebooking policies ahead of time by screenshotting them before leaving home. Gordon warned against rushing to accept the first available rebooking option, noting that it could result in being stranded overnight at a connecting airport with baggage delayed on another flight.

Other suggested precautions include regularly monitoring flight status through airline apps with notifications enabled for updates on gate changes, delays, or cancellations. Passengers with connections at busy airports should allot extra time, and essential items should be kept in carry-on luggage to remain accessible during extended waits.
